Post-therapeutic professional supportive care has been demonstrated as an integral part of periodontal treatment. This constitutes the only means of establishing the long-term beneficial treatment results.
In order to achieve these goals, regular clinical re‐evaluations with appropriate interceptive treatment, continued psychological support and encouragement of the patient, and a lifelong commitment by the therapists are required.
The recall appointment basically consists of four different sections:
- Examination and re‐evaluation of the case
- Motivation, re‐instruction, and tooth instrumentation
- Treatment of re‐infected sites
- Polishing of the entire dentition, application of fluorides, and determination of future recall visit
Treated periodontal patients who comply with regular periodontal maintenance appointments every 3-6 months have a better lomg-term prognosis than patients who do not comply.
