How is periodontal disease diagnosed?
Periodontitis is diagnosed with careful clinical and radiographical examination during the routine dental check-up. Recent studies estimate that over 50% of the general population and 90% of adults suffer from some form of periodontal disease. Nonetheless, 8 out of 10 of those diagnosed with periodontal disease were not aware that they had a problem.
A careful clinical examination with a periodontal probe may reveal periodontal pockets, which are representative of periodontal lesions. Deep periodontal pockets harbor anaerobic pathogenic bacteria and are associated with disease progression.
